IssuesFiles and Drives Hardware Drive/Storage Recovery Updated December 08 2024
This is for when a storage device has physical damage or issues. Examples include a broken drive or connector, unusual sounds from a hard drive, etc.

Some common causes for storage issues:
Dropping
Connector damage (for USB drives)
Power Surge
Sudden failure of a component (diode or resistor)

The first thing to consider: How important is the data to you.

You SHOULD go with a professional data recovery service, unless you are not willing to pay $400+ (up to a couple thousand dollars, depending on the issue) to get the data back. Keep in mind that if you try the cheap/non professional methods first, and they do not work, odds are it will have made the professional data recovery both more expensive and less likely to work. If you are offering this to a customer, be sure that they understand that.

Below is a Pro's and Con's list for a Professional Data Recovery service vs a regular computer tech.

Professional Data Recovery Service
Pro: Odds of getting the data back are high ( perhaps 80% )
Pro: Most won't charge if they can't recover the data (some have certain fees regardless)
Con: Price ($350 to $3,000)
Con: They are often not local, which means shipping the drive, which adds a small risk.
Regular Computer Tech:
Pro: Price ( often $75 - $200 depending on the situation )
Pro: Speed (maybe, depending on the tech, but no shipping of drives is needed)
Con: Odds of getting the data back are low ( perhaps 25-50% )
Con: Most will charge at least some amount even with no data recovered.

That being said, I have not assisted with any drives being sent to a data recovery. This is because my business customers all have backups, and the residential customers have decided that the data is not worth the price, and have asked me to try myself.
