This is for when a storage device has physical damage or issues. Examples include a broken drive or connector, unusual sounds from a hard drive, etc.
Some common causes for storage issues: Dropping Connector damage (for USB drives) Power Surge Sudden failure of a component (diode or resistor) The first thing to consider: How important is the data to you. You SHOULD go with a professional data recovery service, unless you are not willing to pay $400+ (up to a couple thousand dollars, depending on the issue) to get the data back. Keep in mind that if you try the cheap/non professional methods first, and they do not work, odds are it will have made the professional data recovery both more expensive and less likely to work. If you are offering this to a customer, be sure that they understand that. Below is a Pro's and Con's list for a Professional Data Recovery service vs a regular computer tech.
That being said, I have not assisted with any drives being sent to a data recovery. This is because my business customers all have backups, and the residential customers have decided that the data is not worth the price, and have asked me to try myself. |
