GuideOS (Operating Systems)Apple OS X OS X Running slowly due to Spotlight indexing service Updated July 06 2026
If you open up Activity Monitor and notice corespotlightd using a lot of CPU and disk reads/writes, you may have an indexing issue. The official Apple guide is here, but it didn't work for me:
https://support.apple.com/en-ca/102321

My steps:
Open this folder
~/Library/Metadata/
Run this in terminal:
sudo killall corespotlightd

Rename this folder "CoreSpotlight"
Run this again:
sudo killall corespotlightd

It should create a new "CoreSpotlight" folder. Restart computer.
I verified in Activity Monitor that it was no longer hogging resources.
